Council calls those shielding in Neath Port Talbot as part of ‘safe and well’ service

Neath Port Talbot Council is set to begin making its second round of phone calls this week to check on the welfare of those residents who have previously been advised to shield from COVID-19.

The phone calls are being made by the Council’s NPT Safe & Well Service which was set up at the start of the coronavirus pandemic last year to support residents who don’t have anyone to call on for help with everyday tasks. The first round of calls were made last May during the first lockdown.

The purpose of the phone calls will be to check how residents are coping and to find out if they require any additional support with things like shopping, collecting medication, other general daily tasks or whether they would like someone to talk to if they are feeling lonely.

For those who need support, the service can sign post people to local businesses and supermarkets that offer a delivery service or can connect people to local community groups or volunteers to provide the help they need.

At no point will anyone from the service ask for any personal information or bank details. If anyone is uncertain over the validity of the call, they can contact the NPT Safe and Well Service directly on 01639 686868.

Councillor Rob Jones, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, said: “The NPT Safe and Well Service is here help our most vulnerable residents during the pandemic. I know that many people are lucky enough to have family, friends and neighbours nearby who can help them, but that’s not the case for everyone.

“We will be making nearly 6000 calls to check how people are doing during these difficult times and to make sure they are aware of the support that is available if needed.”

To contact the service, call 01639 686868 (8:30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday). For further information, visit .

NPT Safe & Well is a partnership response to the coronavirus pandemic set up by Neath Port Talbot Council, community groups, housing associations and businesses to ensure those who need additional support are able to access it.
