Popular Sandy Bridge footway in Llanelli to be widened

The pavement at the end of Pembrey Road and across Sandy Bridge is being widened to ensure it is safer for children and pedestrians to use.
The busy route is used by children accessing the school and college and also walkers heading to the Millennium Coastal Path, Llanelli Beach and Sandy Water Park, with footfall increasing heavily since the pandemic lockdown.
Work is expected to begin next month with an expected timeframe for completion of 10 weeks.
Temporary traffic controls will be required for certain aspects of the work.
Cllr Hazel Evans, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board Member for Environment, said: “This footway which is on a busy road is widely used by many pedestrians, so extending it will not only improve their safety, but it will give parents greater confidence to allow their children to walk to school. It will also support increased walking in the area which has grown throughout Covid-19 lockdown.”
The scheme is part of the Carmarthenshire’s Active Travel Network plans. Councils have a statutory duty under The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 to develop, improve, and promote routes for walking and cycling for every day short journeys, like walking to the shops, walking the children to school, cycling to work, or cycling to the station to catch a train.
The scheme is being funded through the Welsh Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Covid Response Fund.
