A series of bike hire stations are being installed at key locations in Carmarthenshire to encourage people to enjoy active travel.

Carmarthenshire County Council is working with national company Brompton Bike Hire to install three hire stations at Carmarthen Bus Station, Burry Port interchange, and Llanelli Railway Station.

Believed to be the first of its kind in Wales, people will be able to reserve a bike online or by text and collect it from a dock from as little as £3.50 a day.

The bikes are foldable and can be taken on public transport.

It provides a unique way of linking up key Carmarthenshire sites whilst giving people options to travel actively in some of the county’s most picturesque locations.

Then, once they are done, they simply return the bike to the nearest dock so it’s available for re-hire.

The council obtained Welsh Government Local Transport Network Funding to implement the scheme.

Once operational within the next few weeks, they will be fully managed, operated and maintained by Brompton Bike Hire.

The bikes will be regularly sanitised as part of a maintenance regime, although users will be asked to clean the bikes before and after use.

Cllr Hazel Evans, Executive Board Member for Environment, said: “We’re pleased to be the first county in Wales to make this bike hire available as an alternative means of transport for people in Carmarthenshire. This is part of focused efforts to improve active travel facilities, and will allow people to break up public transport journeys or simply use the bikes to get out and about in our towns.”

Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, added: “Cycling can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and this scheme provides options for people who may not have a bike of their own but want to enjoy the fantastic scenery Carmarthenshire offers.”
