JON BURREE
LIBERAL DEMOCRATS CANDIDATE – LLANELLI

1. Tell us about yourself:

I am Jon Burree, I was educated locally at St Michael’s School before going on to study Politics at Aberystwyth University. Those years in college are the only time, I have lived outside of Llanelli. Whilst still at school, in 1980, I joined the then Liberal Party & have been a Liberal & Liberal Democrat member & campaigner ever since. I’m a former member of Llanelli Town Council. I am now retired, I spent many years as a carer for family members firstly for my mother & then for my brother. I currently serve as Vice Chair of the Welsh Liberal Democrats.

2. What is the most important thing you think the Senedd should do in the next five years?

“With so many challenges facing Wales in the coming years it is difficult to pick just one. However, for me personally, seeing the economic fallout from the devastating Covid pandemic, and the unfolding impact of Brexit on towns across South Wales, the priority should be delivering a green recovery that brings with it economic prosperity for people of Llanelli whilst also reducing the impact of climate change and pollution. The tragic impact of the Covid pandemic, that took so many lives, allows us to reset our economy with a focus on a green recovery that will deliver a better future.

A recovery that recognises some of the fantastic manufacturing that takes place already within our community but also seeks to transition to the future that we so desperately need. A future that seeks to protect our first class scenery through prioritising of clean renewable energy, environmentally friendly business practice & electric vehicles for both commercial & domestic use, but also seeks to promote the exporting of our incredible local produce from Burry Port cockles to Llangennech honey, and so much more. Brexit has hit us hard, with new regulations and red take on exports to our biggest and closest market. In spite of this our quality produce can still be competitive and desirable across the world, and I intend to shout about it!”

3. What will you do for your constituency/region if elected?

“If elected as the representative for the Llanelli constituency I will focus on collaborating with other Senedd members to deliver a green recovery for the people of Llanelli & Carmarthenshire.

I will seek to achieve this through the expansion of renewable energy capacity across South Wales. Furthermore, a crucial component to the electric vehicle future that is essential if we are to cut our carbon emissions, is the expansion of electric charging points along public highways. I will work with local authorities to deliver this goal.”
