Calls to open up Welsh hospitality earlier as Tory Senedd hopeful asks ‘where’s the science’ in keeping pubs shut

Welsh Conservatives have asked “where is the science?” and called on Labour to safely ease restrictions for activities such as outdoor hospitality.

In light of more encouraging public health data, Myles Langstone, the Welsh Conservative Senedd Candidate for Gower, has called for restrictions on outdoor hospitality to be lifted to help “save Welsh jobs and businesses”.

Myles argues that many people in Wales will be spending their money in England while hospitality remains closed in Wales – meaning Welsh businesses and our local economy is losing out massively!

Welsh Conservatives have published a cautious and detailed roadmap out of lockdown that would’ve seen outdoor hospitality resume by now in Wales, whilst two days ago, Welsh hospitality businesses criticised the ongoing restrictions by Labour ministers.

Myles Langstone said: “It’s absolutely tragic that Welsh businesses are losing out on money which will now be spend in England, all because the Welsh Government want different rules in Wales for the sake of being different – rather than following the science.

“The other impact of hospitality remaining closed is the huge gatherings and issues related to public drinking. Reopening beer gardens and outdoor dining can help to provide part of the solution to the issues we have seen across Gower and Swansea. By reopening outdoor hospitality, people will be in designated licenced spaces and environments which are far more controlled in terms of being Covid-secure, following the hard work by local businesses to put Covid-safe measures in place.”

Welsh Conservative leader, Andrew RT Davies said: “The British vaccination programme continues to go from strength to strength and has provided us with a path out of lockdown.

“Caution is crucial but it’s also vital we acknowledge the devastating impact restrictions are having on Welsh livelihoods, and on the physical and mental wellbeing of so many in Wales.

“Sadly, Wales is trailing behind other areas of the UK because Labour insist on playing politics, rather than following the science.

“It makes little sense, and lost trade across the border ultimately means lost livelihoods in Wales. With low case rates and high vaccination numbers, Labour ministers must now act to save Welsh jobs and businesses as with each passing day more go to the wall.

“Welsh Conservatives have published a cautious, yet detailed, roadmap outlining how we would have reopened hospitality as well as other sectors in the economy, including gyms.

“People across Wales are asking where is the science? Families, workers and businesses deserve answers and Labour need to stop playing politics, heed our plan, or explain why hospitality can resume a number of metres across the border in England, but not in Wales, at the expense of Welsh jobs.”
