Upgraded cycle and walking route opens between Neath and Tonna

Improvements to the Active Travel route alongside the towpath between Neath and Tonna have been completed.

The latest in Neath Port Talbot Council’s growing network of Active Travel routes, it will take users from Bridge Street in Neath to a point next to Calor Gas in Tonna.

The council commissioned contractors Jones Brothers (Henllan) Ltd to undertake the works on the Welsh Government funded scheme with works commencing in January of this year.

By upgrading and creating new walking and cycling routes, Neath Port Talbot Council plans to make Active Travel the “normal” way to make local journeys, improving air quality, promoting healthier lifestyles and increasing the attractiveness of local communities as places to live and work.

Cllr Leanne Jones, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Deputy Leader and ward councillor for Tonna, said: “As well as helping to reduce carbon and improve our air quality, Active Travel journeys are also good for our health generally as they improve fitness and wellbeing.

“This new route along the local towpath will help make journeys between Neath and Tonna on foot or by bicycle easier and safer for everyone. It will also provide opportunities for those who don’t currently walk or cycle often and for people who use mobility aids.”

Cllr Annette Wingrave, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Sustainable Development added: “Active Travel routes have long been a priority for the council. As well as the benefits they provide for physical and mental health, they can help reduce the heavy burden on our health services of treating preventable illnesses and of course, businesses will see the benefit of having a healthier workforce.

“And we should not forget the contribution of these routes to creating fewer road traffic collisions and potentially reducing the impact of climate change.”
