Wales’ oldest museum flings open its doors

Wales’ oldest museum has opened its doors to welcome back visitors for the first time in 14 months.

Staff at the award-winning Swansea Museum that’s home to some of the most precious historical artefacts in Wales are delighted to be able to welcome the public back to the venue. However, all visitors will now need to book their ticket in advance.

Re-opening highlights include never-shown before exhibits from the museum’s costume collection, the commemorative ‘Three Night Blitz’ exhibition and new exhibits from the natural history collection in the main gallery.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “It’s brilliant news that Swansea Museum will once again be re-opening It’s historical doors to the public. It’s one of the most celebrated of our city’s cultural assets and over the last year or so people have been only able to enjoy it online.

“Now it’s able to re-open, visitors will get the chance to view exhibits from collections that have never been shown before such as the wedding dress of Emma Dillwyn Llewelyn that dates back to 1833.

“In addition, the ‘Three Night Blitz’ exhibition looks at how people reacted to the devastating experience that changed lives and the town forever, featuring artworks from local artists at the time and Dylan Thomas’ radio broadcast ‘Return Journey’, written by him in the aftermath of the bombing.”

The museum will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to Sundays. Entry will be by free ticket only and which have to be booked in advance. Visitors will need to wear face-masks during their visit and respect social distancing in line with Welsh Government rules to keep people safe.
