Swansea’s historic Oystermouth Castle is reopening its gates for guided tours through the summer holidays.

From Monday, July 26, visitors will be able to hear colourful stories of the castle’s long history thanks to experienced volunteer guides from the Friends of Oystermouth Castle.

To keep visitors and personnel safe at the 12th century attraction, each tour will be undertaken in line with the latest Welsh Government pandemic guidelines.

Swansea Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: “This is great news for Swansea’s residents and visitors.

“The castle is one of Wales’ finest – it’s an imposing monument in a spectacular location. Special features include 14th century graffiti art and private staircases leading from vaults to former banqueting halls.

“It has been temporarily closed to the public due to the pandemic but now vital work is continuing to protect and conserve this important monument.”

Tours are scheduled to take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. They’ll each last around 45 minutes from 10.30am, 11.45am, 2pm and 3.15pm.

Safety measures include social distancing, a one-way system and hand sanitiser. The wearing of masks is encouraged as tours include enclosed features.

The castle’s visitor centre, Alina’s Chapel and the glass bridge are currently closed as a result of the essential conservation work that is underway. Details of this work will be explained during each tour.
