Seafront 10k set for Swansea this Sunday
This Sunday is due to see the return of the award winning Admiral Swansea Bay 10k.
The 40th anniversary staging of the annual race starts at 11am from the St Helen’s sports ground and organisers are urging visitors and motorists to be prepared for road closures on the day.
Crowds are likely to start gathering at around 8.30am as around 4,000 runners get ready for the main race which heads west from St Helen’s along Mumbles Road to Oystermouth Car Park. Here, the runners turn and head back along the promenade towards the finish on the Prom at the Slip Bridge.
A number of other races will take place, including 1k and 3k races for juniors and a 10k wheelchair race. All races are now full so people won’t be able to sign-up to take part on the day.
Swansea Council organises the event which, this year, has a 1980s theme to mark the fact that the event began in 1981. Entrants are free to celebrate everything 80s through fancy dress such as sweatbands, leg warmers, big hair and bright colours.
Expect themed music, 80s characters, icons and entertainment at specially installed Cheer Points along the route.
The event will also look different to previous years because the council has put in place measures to reflect the fact that Covid-19 is still with us. Changes include a lower number of entrants, fewer areas where runners will be bunched together and a staggered start process.
Robert Francis-Davies, cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism said: “It’ll be great to see people running once again in the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k which has become a key part of Swansea’s event calendar.
“We have Covid safety measures in place and, as always, we’re keeping the road closures to a minimum. They’re a necessary safety measure for an event of this size and we’d like to thank everybody in advance for their understanding.”
This will be the 15th occasion that Admiral has sponsored the event.
Sunday’s road closures will include:
- 0930-1330 – Mumbles Road closed between Guildhall Road South and Sketty Lane.
- 0930-1330 – Brynmill Lane closed between Mumbles Road and Bryn Road, except for access southbound to the Recreation Ground off Brynmill Lane for parking (subject to availability on the day).
- 1030-1330 – Sketty Lane right turn only onto Mumbles Road.
- 1030-1330 – Sketty Lane closed southbound. Access to Singleton Hospital and the Wales National Pool maintained.
- 1030-1330 – Mumbles Road closed in Mumbles direction only between Sketty Lane and Mayals Road. Left turn only (towards the city centre) from Ashleigh Road, Derwen Fawr Road, Mill Lane and Mayals Road.
- 1030-1330 – Mumbles Road closed between Mayals Road and Fairwood Road.
- 1030-1330 – Mumbles Road closed in Mumbles direction only between Fairwood Road and Newton Road. Left turn only towards the city centre from Alderwood Road, Bethany Lane, Palmyra Court, Norton Avenue, Norton Road and Newton Road.
Re-opening times are approximate as they depend on the speed of the runners.
Diversion routes have been made available where possible and special information will be issued to those who live or work next to the 10k route.
