Neath Port Talbot
Top award for a Neath Port Talbot housing association’s sustainability commitment
Tai Tarian’s commitment to creating sustainable homes for its tenants has been recognised at the annual Wales Energy Efficiency Awards.
The Neath Port Talbot-based housing association came out on top in the Landlord of the Year category in recognition for the work it is doing to improve the sustainability of its tenants’ homes.
The judges were particularly impressed with them investing almost £3million in improving the energy efficiency of their properties over the past year, through installing external wall insulation, double glazing windows and solar panels where possible. These works plus other initiatives will see them save around 470 tonnes of carbon, every year.
In addition, Tai Tarian were praised for other environmentally friendly initiatives they had undertaken, including adding several new electric vehicles to its fleet, planting over 2000 trees, using renewable energy on all new build properties and taking part in a major initiative to retrofit existing homes with the latest energy saving technology.
They were also commended for their plans to modernise 72 flats and create another 55 in the Sandfields area of Port Talbot, using the latest environmentally friendly methods, including natural fibres such as sheep wool and mycelium to insulate the properties. This, together with other initiatives will see the creation of one of the most environmentally friendly communities in Wales.
The award follows on from Tai Tarian announcing in 2019 that it aims to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030.
Nick Cope, Head of Capital Investment at Tai Tarian said: “Two years ago, we announced that we wanted to become carbon neutral by 2030. Since then, we have made a great start on fulfilling this ambition and I’m really pleased that our efforts have been recognised so early on in our journey.
“This accolade is a fitting reward for our staff, who are really buying in to our vision along with our tenants, contractors and other partners for supporting us in achieving this goal.
“There is still much to do, both for us as an organisation and as society in general to combat climate change, but by all doing our bit we can help create a sustainable planet for everyone.”
