The Chair of Carmarthenshire County Council has been wearing down the treads of his walking boots in efforts to raise money for the Wales Air Ambulance service.

Cllr Eirwyn Williams, who represents the ward of Cynwyl Gaeo, has been fundraising for the charity since he took his chain of office last May.

He vowed to walk the equivalent length of the county boundary, some 255 miles, in return for sponsorship – but is on track to do that distance three times over, clocking up over 550 miles already since he began his mission, and there’s no signs of him stopping.

Cllr Williams has been walking with his wife Joyce and family in his local area almost every day to cover the distance rather that walk the actual boundary which would have involved significant travel – and, as he put it – ending up in the sea.

“The Wales Air Ambulance is a very important charity, that receives every penny of its funding through charitable donations,” he said.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my walks and will continue to cover as many miles as I can during my term in office to raise as much money as possible for the charity.”

The Chair is the first citizen of Carmarthenshire County Council, and his duties include chairing full meetings of the council and representing the council at formal and ceremonial occasions in the county and beyond, as well as welcoming guests and supporting events organised by local people and organisations.

Cllr Williams lives in Parc-y-Rhos and has been a county councillor since 1995, representing the ward of Pencarreg until 1999, and his current ward of Cynwyl Gaeo Ward since.

The Wales Air Ambulance service covers the whole area of Wales, attending around 2,500 missions every year providing advanced medical care on board its helicopters whilst transferring critically ill people to hospital.

The service relies entirely on public support and needs to raise £8million every year to operate the service.
