Swansea University ranked 26th in Stonewall Equality Index

Swansea University has been named in the UK’s top 100 most inclusive employers for LGBTQ+ staff, for the sixth time in a row.

The Stonewall Top 100 Employers list is compiled from the Workplace Equality Index – the UK’s leading benchmarking tool for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace.

Completing the Workplace Equality Index is a voluntary, annual exercise that enables employers to measure and improve their inclusion practice.

This year, Swansea University has increased its ranking from 47^th to 26^th, its highest ranking to date in the league table of UK employers. 

The University also improved its rank in participating Education Sector entrants from sixth to fifth, and achieved a Gold award, which recognises that Swansea University has embedded LGBT+ equality into its core areas of work at the highest level.

Professor Martin Stringer, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, said: “As an institution, we continue to challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, and seek to provide a positive and inclusive working and learning environment that allows our LGBTQ+ colleagues and students to be respected in their identity and expression. We support and stand with all LGBTQ+ people within our community and are proud of the work we do as we continue to platform diversity, inclusivity and equality. 

“The University and our LGBT+ Staff Network have worked together to make Swansea as accepting as possible during what has been a very difficult period for the LGBTQ+  community, and this improvement in our ranking, and importantly being awarded a Gold award, shows that we are making a real difference. This achievement not only represents where we currently are but also importantly where we are going, and we will build on this moving forward as we continue to effect change as well as delivering information and events with our staff network members, allies and wider community.
