New Swansea private hospital treats 35,000 patients in its first year

HMT Sancta Maria Hospital is celebrating a successful first year in its new, purpose-built facility in SA1.
Despite opening during the pandemic, the hospital has treated over 35,000 patients in the last 12 months both as inpatients and outpatients.

The hospital opened in February 2021 after a construction period of almost two years. Sancta Maria had previously operated from its hospital in Uplands where it was established in 1958.
Despite making many improvements to the site during that time, a new purpose-built facility was needed to provide an improved patient experience and to allow the hospital to install new, modern diagnostic equipment, including an on-site MRI.
The new hospital, located on Lamberts Road in SA1 has three surgical theatres, 12 en-suite patient bedrooms, dedicated day surgery units and a diagnostics suite with digital X-Ray, Ultrasound and MRI. The hospital also benefits from step-free access, underground parking, excellent transport links and a central location just off Fabian Way.
After a successful first year, the hospital is looking to add a number of new treatments in the next 12 months, including the imminent launch of a new Audiology service.
Tony Barratt, Chief Executive of the Healthcare Management Trust (HMT) comments: “We never envisaged that we would open the hospital during the middle of a global pandemic. While we haven’t been able to showcase the hospital to as many people as we would have hoped, we are still celebrating a successful first year and we will hopefully be able to hold our grand opening event in the near future.
“Despite the considerable challenges that we’ve faced, I am extremely proud of the team here and the lengths that they have gone to over the last 12 months to adapt to their new surroundings and change their working practices in line with Covid safety guidelines.
“As we look back on a successful year, we are also focussed on the future and developing our services to meet the needs of people in Swansea and the wider south west Wales area. We will soon launch an audiology service to strengthen our Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) offering and we will be announcing a number of other developments as the year progresses.”
HMT Sancta Maria Hospital is owned and operated by the Healthcare Management Trust, a not-for-profit healthcare organisation that ploughs its surplus back into medical research and local community causes.
