Meurig wins Headteacher of the Year award

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd Headteacher, Meurig Jones has been crowned ‘Headteacher of the Year’ at the Professional Teaching Awards (Cymru).

The awards shine a light on the high quality of teaching in Wales and celebrate the contributions of staff right across the country.

“As a boy from the Valleys and a passionate Welsh speaker, I’m truly humbled and honoured to have received this award,” said Meurig, who was appointed Headteacher at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd in 2016.

“It’s fantastic to work with an exceptional team of staff who work hard in ensuring that learners have the best Welsh-medium education possible.

“My favourite part of the job is working with the pupils. They truly are the best and knowing that we have the support of their parents and carers makes the job so rewarding. I’m grateful to be able to lead the school and celebrate the successes of learners and staff, be it academic, cultural or extra-curricular.

“I take every opportunity to promote the Welsh language, its culture and history here in Bridgend County Borough and I look forward to continuing my work in seeing the area grow its Welsh-medium provision in the near future.”

Cllr Jon-Paul Blundell, Bridgend’s Cabinet Member for Education said: “This is an outstanding achievement for Meurig and everybody at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd. Meurig’s passion for Welsh-medium education is unquestionable and the award is thoroughly deserved.”
