Slam dunk! Basketball facilities improved in Swansea park

Swansea’s basketball players have been given a boost, with new facilities in Victoria Park.
The park court’s two posts have been replaced with new ones – and two additional posts have been installed, extending the basketball area.
This is thanks to work by Swansea Council and Basketball Wales using funding from Sport Wales.
Players there can now enjoy for free the full-sided game plus the sport’s growing #3×3 version.
A second phase of the work in the coming months will see professional-look painted court surfaces.
Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: “Victoria Park is the best used of our outdoor basketball courts so it’s great that the facility’s been upgraded.”
Basketball Wales CEO Gavin Williams said: “We’re excited to be making improvements to these courts.
“Thanks to Sport Wales and the Welsh Government we’ve been successful in bidding for funding to purchase the four new high-spec hoops; they’ll increase the opportunities for more people to play basketball at the park.”
Victoria Park’s four new basketball posts were in action on Sunday, August 21, for their first big event – a Basketball Wales 3×3 tournament that attracted 40 teams and 160 players from across South Wales.
The council has close links with the Swansea Storm club whose members are keen to run open access sessions on the new-look facility. These would introduce young people to the sport.
Victoria Park also has facilities for relaxation, tennis, bowls and children’s play.
