Black history celebrated by city’s cultural favourites

Cultural venues in and around Swansea city centre are part of a UK-wide initiative to celebrate the accomplishments of black Britons.

Swansea Council’s Dylan Thomas Exhibition, Central Library and Glynn Vivian Art Gallery are marking the annual Black History Month throughout October.

They’re joining forces with national arts initiative The World Reimagined which has created a public art trail of giant globes across the city centre. Each artist-designed globe reflects the need for racial equality.

Council cabinet member Elliott King said: “Our cultural venues are a great place to be at all times of the year and especially this month when they reflect how black people have helped shape our communities.

“Swansea’s a warm and welcoming city; a city of culture and Sanctuary – qualities that are venues reflect along with the endeavours – often unheralded – of a wide diversity of our people.”

Black History Month runs throughout October. The World Reimagined art trail launched in Swansea during the summer and is due to remain for all to enjoy until the end of this month.

The Dylan Thomas Exhibition activity this month includes a Jazz Heritage Wales exhibition about Swansea’s former 1800s American slave Willis, creative writing workshops – led by Cameroon-born poet Eric Ngalle Charles – for refugees and those seeking asylum, and new learning resources with Black History Month themes.

The Central Library activity this month will include a Black History Month display plus social media posts promoting related reading resources for all ages.

Glynn Vivian activity will include an exhibition – The World We Live In – that explores themes such as migration and a clothing and stencilling workshop led by The World Reimagined artist Kyle Legall on October 8.
