A £400,000 refurbishment at Maesteg Sports Centre is now underway, in a move that Bridgend County Borough Council say will improve accessibility as well as benefiting both the physical and mental health of residents right across the community.

The project has been funded by a joint investment from Bridgend County Borough Council, Halo Leisure and Sport Wales.

The upgrade will include a larger gym area with brand-new cardio machines, a strength and conditioning space, a wellness zone, and various other new pieces of equipment.

Improvements are also being made to the changing rooms as well as installing new studio, training and workshop spaces.

In addition to the work at Maesteg Sports Centre, a refurbishment at Pyle Swimming Pool has also recently been completed thanks to a £200,000 investment from the council and Halo.

The council say that the renovations were designed to not only improve facilities but to make them more accessible and environmentally friendly.

The improvements include new ceilings, energy efficient lighting to enhance changing rooms, accessible family changing rooms along with new energy efficient showers and around 30 new changing cubicles.

Also, accessible changing spaces are being built poolside, to create a much-improved space for people who need additional support when changing.

Councillor Rhys Goode, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Future Generations and Wellbeing said: “The improvements at both Pyle Swimming Pool and Maesteg Sports Centre will play a vital role in communities across the county borough as many residents use the facilities as a way to improve their mental health and general wellbeing.

“It’s pleasing that the improvements have been developed with accessibility in mind and it is also an added benefit that the facilities are more environmentally friendly than ever before.

“This is a really important investment which will help to make sure that residents have the best possible facilities available for generations to come. It’s also great to see so many organisations working together to deliver these crucial improvements.”
