Controversial speed bumps on notorious potholed Gowerton road could be permanently removed after resurfacing work
Swansea Council has said that controversial ‘speed cushions’ on Cecil Road in Gowerton could be permanently removed following resurfacing work on the pothole riddled street this week.

Complaints about the £280,000 speed cushions even made national headlines with some commenting that the money should have been spent on resolving the street’s potholes first.
Now however, the council looks to have had a change of heart, as it is reportedly removing traffic calming measures as part of a resurfacing scheme.
Local councillor, Dai Jenkins said: “I can now confirm that on 6th and 7th February after months of lobbying the speed cushions on Cecil Road will be removed.
“Not only that a new surface will be laid on that section of road.
“If and when the speed cushions are re-installed, all county councillors will be involved in their reimplementation based on speed and safety.”
Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “Cecil Road has been identified though our regular highway inspections as in need of improvements.
“Our maintenance teams will be moving onto the road in the next few days to complete the works.”
Part of the programme will include removal of the existing traffic calming measures so the resurfacing work can be completed.
The road previously benefited from Safe Routes in Communities funding to help create a safer environment near to local schools.
Cllr Stevens, added: “Once the resurfacing work has been completed along Cecil Road, our traffic management team will carry out regular speed surveys. The results of the surveys will provide information to make a further decision on what traffic calming measures are reinstalled.”
Highways teams are also out and about filling potholes that are plaguing many parts of the country because of cold and wet weather over the winter period.
The first two weeks of January saw maintenance teams fill more than 750 potholes reported to the council by the public.
Cllr Stevens said: “Our quick response to potholes reported is something I’m pleased with. Like many cities and towns across the country, our roads have suffered but we have kept to our promise of repairing potholes within 48hrs. The teams have been extremely busy making sure our roads are safe.”
