Sketty resident invited to King’s coronation at Westminster
Sketty resident Dr. Mahaboob Basha, has been invited to attend the historic King’s Coronation in Westminster on May 6th.

Dr. Basha, who works as the External Relations and Engagement Manager at Energy Safety Reserch Institute (ESRI) for the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Swansea University, will represent the diverse South Wales community at this prestigious event.
In addition to his role at the university, Dr. Basha serves as the Communication and Compliance Lead for the new Sketty Mosque Community Centre on Sketty Park Road.
The Coronation, which will welcome 2,000 guests and dignitaries from around the world and the Commonwealth, offers Dr. Basha the opportunity to witness this momentous occasion in person.
Dr. Basha say his attendance at the Coronation highlights his commitment to representing the staff and students of Swansea University, pupils and staff of Parkland Primary and Olchfa School as there Governing body Governor, as well as the Commonwealth citizens residing in Wales.
Upon receiving the invitation, Dr. Basha stated, ” It is with great humility and gratitude that I accept the invitation to bear witness to a momentous event that will be etched in the annals of British monarchy history. I extend my sincere appreciation to the Wales First Minister’s office for nominating me on behalf of the communities. This invitation is an honor and privilege that I deeply cherish”.
In recognition of his service to the diverse community in Wales during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Basha was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours. Furthermore, he was a runner-up for the National Annual St. David’s Day Award in 2021, presented by the Welsh Government. The Winner of Black History Wales Youth Award in Public Sector 2022 from Race Council Cymru. Dr Basha is active Trade Union member of UCU, GMB and Unite the Union both locally and nationally.
Professor Parvaiz Ali, Chairman Trustee Board of Sketty Mosque Community Centre said: “We are thrilled and honoured to have Dr. Basha attend this historic event representing our community. His presence is a testament to the inclusivity and diversity of our centre, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have him witness this momentous occasion in British history.”
Prof Paul Boyle, Vice-Chancellor at Swansea University said: “We are delighted that Dr Basha will be representing both Swansea University and our wider community on the historic occasion of His Majesty’s Coronation. Invitation extended to Mahaboob reflects his tireless efforts on behalf of staff, students and many citizens of our region.”
Swansea Council Leader, Cllr Rob Stewart said: “huge congratulations to Dr Basha on being chosen to attend the coronation celebrations in London”.
