Morriston Explosion: MP gives thanks to Emergency Services

During her visit, Carolyn Harris MP met with the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) and South Wales Police (SWP) first responders, firefighters and police officers who responded to the incident on Clydach Street, Morriston.

On March 13th, crews from Morriston, Swansea West, Neath, Gorseinon, Port Talbot and Carmarthen were called to an incident in Morriston following several reports of a large explosion.

One property was totally destroyed, the adjoining property was extensively damaged and other neighbouring properties were also damaged by the blast and debris. Three people were taken to hospital by ambulance and South Wales Police confirmed that a search of the scene discovered the body of a person previously unaccounted for.

South Wales Police, the Ambulance Service, the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team, the Hazardous Area Response Team, the Emergency Medical Retrieval Transfer Service, the local authority, National Grid and Wales and West Utilities were also in attendance.

During the visit, Carolyn Harris MP said: “This horrific incident not only resonated within the local community, but the whole of the UK. Following the blast, I had the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition approach me in the House of Commons to offer their thoughts and support to everyone affected.”

Carolyn Harris MP continued: “Visiting the rest centre that was set-up at Morriston Memorial Hall, it was heart-warming to see the community coming together, with locals bringing food, clothes and other essentials to residents who had been evacuated from their homes.”

Repair works are still currently ongoing in the Clydach Road area and Swansea Council has established a community support point in Morriston Library, with a team on hand to assist those who have been directly and indirectly affected by the incident.
