Dean Anthony Rees, aged 48, of Caeconna Road in Swansea, has also been handed a five-year restraining order stopping him from contacting the victim following the incident in Carmarthenshire in September 2022.

A spokesperson for Dyfed Powys Police said: “Our officers went to the victim’s home during the early hours of the morning, when she managed to call 999 as Rees assaulted her. The call handler could hear a woman’s distressed voice saying “stop … I haven’t done anything”, and asking someone to leave her house.

“When officers arrived, she reported that Rees had forced his way in, made accusations against her and strangled her twice.”

Rees was arrested within half an hour of the 999 call being made.

The Police spokesperson added: “The victim was visibly shaken by the assault, and was hesitant to make a statement against him out of fear for her safety.

“With the support of officers, however, she bravely spoke up, and Rees was arrested and charged with intentional strangulation. This is an offence that came into force under the Domestic Abuse Act in 2022 following concerns that perpetrators were avoiding punishment as the act can often leave no visible injury.”

Rees appeared at Swansea Crown Court on Friday, May 5, where he was sentenced to two years in prison.

He was also handed a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim for five years.
