Northeast keen for Glamorgan to bounce back after Surrey defeat
Glamorgan batsman Sam Northeast is keen to see the county bounce back straight away on Friday night against Essex after they suffered only their second defeat of the Vitality T20 campaign last night in Cardiff by 65 runs against Surrey.
In a match where the London-based outfit dominated from the off, posting a mammoth 232-2 off their twenty overs. It was always going to be a tough assignment for Glamorgan’s on-form batsman.

Having won the toss, Surrey decided to bat first and quickly raced through the powerplay to 80-0 as Glamorgan’s growing list of injury casualties saw seamer Dan Douthwaite added to the treatment table, forced off the pitch after bowling just 10 balls.

Australian Peter Hatzoglou finally made the breakthrough trapping Will Jacks lbw in the 12th over of the match. This only brought to the creased England international Sam Curran who gave the Glamorgan attack no rest bite with a series of brutal shots in a quick-fire 66 off 29 balls.
Paired with opener Laurie Evans (118*) who anchored his side with a sublime century, Surrey breezed past 200 on a pitch offering plenty for the bat. Jamie Mcllroy picked up the late wicket of Curran, but the damage was done as Surrey posted 232, a record tally for a T20 at Sophia Gardens.
Without opener Eddie Byrom who had retired hurt in Sunday’s victory over Sussex, captain Kiran Carlson opened the batting with Northeast, hitting a quickfire 22 as Glamorgan looked to reply positively. The skipper though would hole out to Gus Atkinson off the bowling of Curran under pressure to keep up with a rapidly growing run rate now over 13 runs an over.
Experienced England T20 bowler Chris Jordan (2-26) stemmed the run flow before outfoxing Callum Taylor with a yorker, bringing the on-form South African Colin Ingram to the crease.

Spinner Sunil Narine had Ingram removed for 11 to end any remote hopes of a Glamorgan fightback, whilst Atkinson (2-24) got in on the act dismissing the dangerous Chris Cooke.

Northeast (76), to his credit, put respectability in the scoreline with a hard-fought half-century before succumbing to a full Jordan delivery, with the home side well beaten in the end by the London County. A defeat Northeast believes his teammates will want to bounce back quickly from.
“Surrey played very well. Lawrie [Evans] and Will Jacks started brilliantly with the bat, then Sam Curran came in a played a great knock as well,” said Northeast.
“230 was probably a bit too much, if it was somewhere near 200 it might have been a different chase. They also bowled pretty well in stages there, it was a tough night.
“Colin [Ingram] and [Chris Cooke] Cookie have been in unbelievable form and have really shown us the way in this competition. We’ll be back and I’m sure those guys will keep on firing, I’m sure.
“We will bounce back on Friday, it wasn’t to be tonight, now we’re looking forward to the next game.

“It was nice to spend a bit of time in the middle. I wasn’t at my fluent best, but they bowled well at stages, and it was difficult. They are a very good bowling outfit. It was nice to get runs though and hopefully, that’ll kick-start my T20 season.
“It’s a bit walking wounded at the moment. I’m not sure what Dan [Douthwaite] has done, but hopefully, he can come back soon. Eddie [Byrom] is out for a few months so we’re going to have to re-group and go again. It’s an unforgiving schedule, but we’re in a good position in both competitions so we must keep going.
“Everyone realises that we have played some good stuff in the competition so far. After having one loss against a very good side, we’re determined that it will not get to us. I’m sure we will come back on Friday, and it will be a different performance.”
