Elvis Taione announces retirement from rugby

Born in Nuku’alofa, Elvis joined the Ospreys back in 2021 and made 16 appearances in that time.

Taione, also made 80 appearances for the Exeter Chiefs, helping them towards their first-ever Premiership title in 2017.

The 39-year-old hooker joined the Chiefs in 2014 from the Cornish Pirates. He quickly earned plaudits from fans and was known for his strong scrummaging and his ability to carry the ball forward with force.

Taione has had a hugely successful career in rugby, playing for Tonga in the Rugby World Cup on two occasions, in 2011 and 2015. He also represented his country in the Pacific Nations Cup and the World Rugby Pacific Challenge. Before joining the Chiefs, Taione played for several other clubs in England and France.

In a statement, Taione thanked everyone who had supported him throughout his career: “It has been an honour to play rugby at the highest level and to represent Tonga on the international stage.”

“I have many great memories from my time in rugby and I will always cherish them.”

“I have had an amazing time at the Ospreys and want to thank everyone at the club for their support and for making me feel welcome from the day I arrived.”

Head Coach for the Ospreys, Toby Booth, also paid tribute to Taione, adding: “Vissy has quickly established himself as a popular member of the squad.”

“He’s had an impressive career, especially at international level, and we would like to wish him all the best for the future.”
