Scarlets to face Barbarians in Phil Bennett tribute match

The Llanelli-based region will remember the player fondly known as ‘Benny’ by fans by playing the match also as part of the side’s 150^th anniversary of formation.

Bennett, regarded as one of the sides greatest ever players and part of the golden generation of Wales in the 1970s, also starred on 20 occasions in the black and white of the Barbarians, the second highest by any Welshman. His wizardry on the ball epitomising the legendary sides flamboyant nature.

The teams have met on three occasions previously with the Baa-baa’s coming out on top on one occasion and the Scarlets triumphant twice, the first occasion in 1972 played under their previous Llanelli name. 

The last time the two sides met, however, marked the opening of the Welsh region’s Parc y Scarlets ground in 2009 where a capacity crowd cheered on the home side to a 40-24 victory. A side which included current Wales captain Ken Owens and centre Jonathan Davies.

After the overwhelming success of the Whites matchup with the elite side just weeks ago, the region will be hoping for a similar impact in attendance and atmosphere to appeal to old and new supporters of all ages with the family atmosphere.

The club has also announced that Wales World Cup match with Portugal later in the day will be shown on big screens post-match in the supporter’s village.

“It is a huge honour for the club to be welcoming the Barbarians to Llanelli once again for what promises to be a memorable occasion at the end of our 150-year celebrations.” commented Scarlets chairman Simon Muderack.

“To be celebrating an incredible player like Phil who shone for both great clubs makes it that more special.” 

“To be able to host an iconic side like the Barbarians is fantastic for everyone at the Scarlets – players, coaches, staff and, of course, our supporters,” enthused Scarlets Head Coach Dwayne Peel.

“It promises to be another great occasion ahead of the new season and a fitting way to remember a legend like Benny.”
