Swansea marina bridge reopens to pedestrians following renovation work

The Marina Swing Bridge has been closed to pedestrians since March this year while the renovation works were completed.

The 40-year old mechanical bridge has been swinging open and shut since it was installed, providing boats with access to the Marina and also allowing walkers to cross from one side of the maritime quarter to the other.

The work included the replacement of mechanical parts as well as being repainted, giving the equipment a new lease of life for many years. 

Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment & Infrastructure said: “As with any busy working marina, there are lots of elements that help keep it running smoothly. Occasionally we need to carry out essential maintenance to some of these features and prolong the life of the marina.

“Swansea Marina is a hugely popular place for residents and visitors to the city, especially in the summer months.

“I’m pleased we have been able to complete the works without any delays and make sure it’s up and running for the Summer season.”

In July last year, a major refurbishment of the inner lock gates at the marina was completed with an investment of £750,000. The gates are an important part of the marina, enabling boats to pass to and from the Tawe River into the marina.

Swansea Council say that refurbishment of the lock gates has provided a further 10 – 15 year lifespan.

Cllr Stevens added: “The marina is one of our biggest attractions for our city and welcomes hundreds of boats and yachts every year, so it’s vital we invest in the equipment that helps keep the marina functioning.”
