Historic 3M water tower could be demolished

The sprawling factory on Gorseinon Road in Penllergaer closed in 2021 with the loss of 89 jobs.

Plans have now been lodged with Swansea Council’s planning department for the demolition of 9 buildings and structures on the site – including the historic water tower, a highly visible landmark in the area.

Other structures due for demolition include the former clubhouse, chemical and water storage tanks and pipework.

At the time of the closure announcement, 3M says that the Gorseinon site has experienced ongoing underutilisation and has been impacted by changes in the segments it serves, namely the personal care industry; the collision aftermarket and vehicle repair centres. 

The plant, which opened in 1952, would have celebrated it’s 70th anniversary in 2022. It was the American company’s oldest manufacturing facility outside the US.

The company moved its manufacturing operations to its other facilities worldwide, including Bangor in Northern Ireland.

Swansea Bay News have approached 3M for comment on the water tower demolition plans.
