Carmarthen pork producer shortlisted for Wales’s best banger title

Carmarthen’s award-winning pork producer, Red Valley Farm, has been shortlisted in Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales’s ‘Put Your Best Sausage Forward 2023’ competition, with its The Wild Boar Grand Slam sausage selected as amongst the very best bangers in Wales.

Having taken the title for two consecutive years with its wild boar and apple sausage and its wild garlic sausage, respectively, Red Valley Farm is no stranger to glory.

Owned and run by friends and business partners Andy and Graeme, Red Valley Farm rears its own pigs and produces quality pork products.

Speaking of his delight at being nominated, Graeme Carter said: “We are delighted to have made the final and to be able to defend the title that we have won for the past two years. It is a source of great pride to have been champions.

“While we feed our pigs on the best produce available, including brewers’ grain from two local brewers, we also feed them our own hay.  Our customers know they are getting a top quality, traceable product, which is what is at the heart of our business.

“We like to try and experiment with different flavours and ingredients, so we are really proud of our sausage entry this year.  And as we specialise in wild boar, we couldn’t think of a better sausage to put forward than our ‘The Wild Boar Grand Slam’ sausage. 

“We are delighted that the judging panel also liked our sausage and we hope our entry will give us a hat trick.”

Also shortlisted in the ‘Put Your Best Sausage Forward 2023’ competition is Edwards of Conwy Ltd, with its Edwards Firecracker Celebration Sausage, and Haverfordwest-based Prendergast Butchers with their Wild Garlic and Pork Sausage.

Following the final round of judging, the winner of the ‘Put Your Best Sausage Forward 2023’ competition will be announced at a special event during the Thursday of the Royal Welsh Show at the Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales stand.

The winner will also automatically qualify for the UK and Ireland Champion of Champions Sausage competition, which will take place at the Butcher Shop of the Year 2023 Awards next year.

Philippa Gill, Campaigns Executive at Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales, said: “This year’s competition has really demonstrated the passion, creativity and attention to detail our fantastic Porc Blasus producers have when it comes to creating a brilliant banger.

“Choosing the top three entries is always a difficult but enjoyable task, but this year, the standard of entries was off the chart – we would like to give a massive thank you to everyone who took part.

“We wish each of our three finalists good luck for the final, and may the best banger win!”
