Developers say the proposals for the long-vacant site would introduce a contemporary food store and drive-thru designed to complement its setting within the Port Talbot area.

A pre-planning application consultation launched on Friday 28 July 2023 and will run until Friday 25 August 2023 for local residents to share their views.

Commenting on the proposals, Aldi Real Estate Director, Rob Jones, said:“We are excited to unveil our plans for the transformation of Burrows Yard in Port Talbot into a vibrant retail destination. This development will not only breathe new life into this long-vacant site but also provide a boost to the local economy with the creation of up to 70 full-time equivalent jobs.”

“We believe in engaging with local residents to ensure that our proposals align with their needs and aspirations. We invite members of the community, to share your thoughts, concerns, and ideas with us during this crucial stage of the process.”

The vacant Burrows Yard site has been branded as an “eyesore” by locals.

Neath Port Talbot Council exchanged contracts for the site back in January ahead of the formal planning application.

With an investment of over £7 million into the Port Talbot community and the creation of up to 70 full-time jobs the retailer says this new store will provide significant economic benefits. The jobs will be paid at Aldi’s industry-leading and National Living Wage beating, £11.40.

Aldi says it champions convenience and this site is served by multiple bus services, accessible by foot, and has 145 free car parking spaces, including nine parent-and-child bays and eight accessible bays.

EV users will have eighteen EV charging points available with additional infrastructure installed for further charging points to be added in the future.

The retailer says it’s new store will provide a high-quality, comfortable retail environment with appealing landscaping across the site. It adds that to further ensure an excellent long-term appearance, Aldi only uses high-quality materials both inside and outside its building.
