Forgotten Swansea amphitheatre to get revamp

Swansea Council has secured £180,000 of Welsh Government funding to update and improve the Swansea Amphitheatre that stands between the Marina and LC.

Council leader Rob Stewart said: “Once developed, the amphitheatre will help link our new Copr Bay district with leisure and cultural activities and attractions that attract hundreds of thousands of people every year. 

“We’re delighted that – with the support of Welsh Government funding – we now have the opportunity to refurbish and enhance the amphitheatre. This’ll make it more attractive and practical as a performance space. 

“There’ll be a number of exciting improvements such as an artistically designed sail-type roof to protect audiences from the elements, colour changing lighting, mains electricity supply and fit-for-purpose flooring. 

“We thank the Welsh Government for the funding. Coupled with our own investment, it’ll enable this facility to be brought back into full use. We look forward to the work taking place in due course. 

“Since the pandemic, the demand for safe outdoor all-year spaces for cultural activities and performances has increased. The redevelopment of this facility will help to satisfy this demand.” 

The Welsh Government has just announced their amphitheatre funding when it was revealed that tourism projects across Wales had won a share of their £5m Brilliant Basics Fund to help deliver first-class holiday experiences. 

The amphitheatre was created in the late 1970s and hosted gigs, attracting hundreds to sit and enjoy live entertainment. 

In recent years it has become used as a casual meeting space, especially during the warmer months. 

The council say that consultation with stakeholders will be undertaken before the improvement work is carried out.
