Inspirational Fishguard man with Down’s Syndrome reaches finals of international photography competition

A man from Fishguard has reached the finals of an international photography competition.

Stephen Lucas captured the imagination of the judges for his shot entitled ‘Laugharne Estuary’, and has now reached the final of the Down’s Syndrome Association’s My Perspective’ photography competition.

Stephen said, on reaching the shortlist: “I feel excited and over the moon!”

He said of his stunning photograph: “A gloomy winter’s day but not a dull photo. Dylan Thomas lived here and enjoyed this wonderful view.”

When asked why he enjoys taking photographs, Stephen told us: “Because it is interesting and I like looking back at my photographs later. It makes me feel clever.”

Stephen enjoys looking for and watching all wildlife, especially whales dolphins and birds. He also likes watching Manchester United win, swimming, being with friends and walking in the open countryside.

The My Perspective competition is open to people who have Down’s syndrome from across the world. This year entries came from as far away as India, South Africa, Canada and USA and included a child’s category for the first time.

Stephen and 29 other finalists will be invited to attend a special ceremony in London on 12 October where the winners will be announced.

The competition gives budding photographers who have the genetic condition a chance to show off their talents to a group of industry professionals.
