Frustrated Duff bemoans errors after Swans beaten at Ipswich

Swansea City head-coach Michael Duff believes his side’s mistakes cost them the game in their 3-2 defeat against high-flying Ipswich Town yesterday afternoon at Portman Road.

Having started the brighter of the two teams taking the lead early through Jay Fulton’s header inside the first ten minutes, Duff’s side failed to capitalise on possession as the visitors levelled through Jack Taylor’s 25-yard screamer.

In a quick turnaround, Ipswich took the lead with Connor Chaplin punishing poor Swans defending from a corner, before deservedly scoring a third after the break through George Hirst’s penalty.

The Swans lost Liam Cullen to a red card for two bookable offenses with an hour to play and rallied to come back into the game with a late Jamal Lowe solo effort.
It would be too little too late with the Northern Irish boss unhappy with his side’s uncharacteristic errors as his teams three match winning run on the road came to an end.

“There’s frustration, we dominated the game until we went 1-0 up. Five minutes of madness has killed us and put us on the back foot, which is unlike us,” said Duff.

“There’s a mistake in the first one, but sometimes you have to hold your hand up when someone scores a worldy from 25 yards.

“The next goal is not good enough; people are not doing their jobs and tracking their runners. We’ve had a lot of plaudits and sometimes you have to point out when people have not done their job. It isn’t good enough and it has cost us the game.

“They’re a good team and we dominated the ball. They were trying to kill time in the last minute of the game, and we had been a man down for 20 minutes.

“It’s getting a balance for that bravery at the right time. We were really good at times with the ball, but we made elementary errors from dead ball situations.

“They’re a good team who are going to hurt you and get chances. It’s getting the players to not wait till we’re 3-1 down.

“At 0-0, we played how we wanted to play and at ten men it was us with the ball. It’s difficult to hurt them all the time, but you’re keeping it and playing it around them. They can do that when they have 11, which is the frustration. We concede a goal, and it takes 20 minutes to reset again.

“I’m pleased that they kept going and the character, but I felt the performance warranted more than nothing. I’ll take most of that performance, if we can cut out the errors, we will be ok.”
