Reminiscence and laughter ‘An Evening with Scott Gibbs and Neil Jenkins’ delivers on all fronts
You would expect nothing less from the former Wales Rugby Union duo whose ‘Evening with’ show remembering Wales epic win at Wembley Stadium 25 years ago went down a storm on Saturday night in Swansea’s Grand Theatre.
It is genuinely great to go out these days to relax and be entertained. That is exactly what the Platinum Room put on for an enthralling evening of fun and laughter in Swansea on Saturday night.
A 200 strong Grand Theatre Arts Wing audience were not disappointed as they were firstly warmed up to a rip-roaring set of rugby anthems from the excellent ‘Woolfey’ before wonderful compare Phil Howe would provide laugh a plenty with his quick witted tongue in cheek humour.
The main event though would not disappoint as the crowd would listened with bated breath to everything Scott and Neil had to say about that epic showdown with the old enemy remarkably a quarter of a century ago.
Scott would describe how ‘that try’ was a premeditated move talked about before the game but never rehearsed. It would be amazing to think how one moment changed the context of the match – with that iconic image of former British & Irish Lions centre Gibbs diving over the line, before Jenkins would slot over calmly the extras to clinch the result.
Jenkins, who had made his international debut with Gibbs against England in 1991 when they were both teenagers, would add that he was screaming at Gibbs with his head in his hands to touch down under the posts to make his kick easier. It would be to no avail though.
What a ******* said host and comedian Howe who wonderfully guided the evening, keeping the mood jovial, questioning the two Welsh legends on their distinguished careers.
For me though Neil stole the show. The audience would be rolling in laughter at the often-hilarious stories that the former Pontypridd fly-half has experienced on and off the field.
With a cheeky smile the 52-year-old would recall the notorious ‘Battle of Brive’ in France with Ponty against the then European Champions in 1997 where lets just say both sides didn’t get on.
Along with sparing partner ‘the Chief’ Dale MacIntosh the carnage would continue off the field as Jenks and his teammates got into many a scrape that if you ever get chance to listen to the man describing are worth hearing.
The duo would stay and meet the crowd as several memorabilia would be auctioned off at the end of the show by Howe. With smiles a plenty all around, audience members would take away several signed items, whilst one fans evening was made with Gibbs signing a classic Swansea jersey made famous by the Wales legend in the nineties.
Future Platinum Room events
After the success of the weekend, the Platinum room will present in less than two months’ time the event ‘An Evening with Mike Phillips and Adam Jones. Howe will be back to host the event which will sure to have plenty of entertainment.
On Friday the 14th of June at the Gwyn Hall, Neath, the former Welsh greats who gained a total of 189 caps between them will have plenty stories to tell about their multiple Grand Slam Six Nations titles and Lions tours.
Limited amounts of tickets are still on sale for the event with VIP meet and greet packages also available to purchase via this link.
