Kalvin Davies, 33, of New Road, Treboeth, pleaded guilty to assault before a jury found him guilty of rape during his subsequent trial.
Davies assaulted the victim by hitting her repeatedly and attempting to strangle her during an incident at his home address. He then proceeded to rape the victim. Later, he locked the victim in his house, with the victim only managing to escape whilst he was asleep.
Davies denied all the offences up to the date of trial but then admitted the assault and strangulation offences though maintained his innocence of the rape, claiming that after he had beaten up the woman she initiated sex with him.
In a statement from the victim read to the court the woman described how the the attack has had a devastating impact on her life explaining that her anxiety is ‘huge’ feels ‘frightened and on edge’ looking over her shoulder constantly explaining what the defendant had done to her ‘will never go away’.
Judge Paul Thomas KC told Davies he had beaten up and raped the woman, and his subsequent claim that she had initiated sex with him after he had subjected her to a sustained beating was a ‘risible’ one and one the jury had seen through.
He said the defendant’s ‘true character’ had been revealed in the witness box when he had been cross-examined by the prosecution and it became clear that he dislikes being challenged by a woman.
He said it may be that the defendant gets a sexual thrill from emotionally and physically subjugating women and any expressed remorse had been a tactic used by the defendant during the trial.
It was also said that Davies represents a substantial risk of serious harm to women in the future and an extended sentence was necessary to protect the public.
Davies was made the subject of a 15-year extended sentence comprising 12 years in custody followed by a three-year extended licence period.
The defendant must serve two-thirds of the custodial element of the sentence before he can apply to be released but it will be for the Parole Board to determine if he is safe to be released. He will be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.
Detective Constable Sian Evans, the investigator on the case, said:
“Due to the bravery of the victim, Kalvin Davies, an incredibly dangerous individual, will now be off the streets for a considerable period of time.
“We are pleased to see the victim achieve justice for the harrowing ordeal that they have gone through.
