Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen has signed a new contract to extend his second spell with the club through to the end of June 2025.
With his previous contract having been due to expire this summer, 34-year-old Allen follows on from Kyle Naughton yesterday in signing for the Swans for the next campaign.
Like Naughton, Allen’s experience within the camp will be vital as head-coach Luke Williams looks to develop a strong blend of youth and experience for next season.
A veteran of 74 caps for Wales across a 13-year international career, Allen has helped the Dragons reach three major finals in a glittering international career. Whilst under former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers he would shine in the Premier League for Liverpool before enjoying a successful spell at Stoke City.
Allen, who rejoined the Swans in 2022 after a decade away from his boyhood club, produced a strong run of form following Williams’ appointment in January 2024.
During that time, the player once known as the ‘Welsh Pirlo’ passed 200 appearances in Swansea colours, and was an influential figure in vital wins over the likes of Sunderland and Cardiff City. A timeframe which coincided with a purple patch for the boys in black and white to secure Championship safety, before a foot injury ended his season prematurely.
Williams speaking about the veteran stars ability to the press at the back end of the season said:
“I love talking about Joe, he is incredible and a true Jack. His play is so smooth, and he reads the game so well and is another player that has sacrificed everything he has in his body for the team.
“He is such a mild-mannered man and a quality footballer. Secretly he is an animal as well and brilliant to work with.
“It’s not like he is a huge man that can throw his weight around, but he is hugely competitive and switched on. He loves the team and the club.
“It is really evident. He quietly goes about his business in a focused way and there is no doubt that this club means a huge amount to him.
“He is a big player in the dressing room, the warm-up and the bench. That is what guys like that bring. I am very lucky I get the chance to work with him.”
The futures of the three remaining out of contract first-teamers in Liam Walsh, Jamie Paterson and Przemyslaw Placheta still remain up in the air, however, a decision on their future is likely to be announced in the next week.
