Swansea Council say year-round its cleansing teams are out first thing in the morning after the night before, mopping up after revellers who’ve dumped their waste and leftovers, often where they stood.

It’s a job the team does every day, 364 days a year, collecting up to 25 tonnes of rubbish a day on their rounds from St Helen’s Road in the west to the top of High Street in the east as well as busy city centre hotspots like Wind Street, Oxford Street and Kingsway.

Cyril Anderson, Cabinet Member for Community Services, says he’s seen what a night out in Swansea city centre can look like and what council teams are faced with in the early hours of the morning.

“The team do a brilliant job, day-in and day-out, clearing up the morning after the night before. On busy morning’s there will be seven or eight vehicles picking up anything from 15 to 25 tonnes of waste.

“The work they do is all part of the council’s continuing commitment to keeping our city centre as clean as possible and as free from waste as possible, spending around £2m a year in the process. IT contributes to our commitment to supporting the local economy and doing the right thing by our environment.

“We’ve got a thriving night-time environment in the city centre. We want people to enjoy themselves, have fun and return home safe and well.

“Our message to those on a night out is: don’t slip up on your litter – put it in a bin or take it home with you.”

Throughout the day the council says it regularly deploys sweeping machines and teams around the city centre, clearing up after day-time littering, particularly wasted food, cigarette butts and chewing gum.

Cllr Anderson said: “The council does its bit to keep the city centre clean. We would urge visitors, residents and businesses to do their bit too. It’s not rocket science: if you can’t find a bin, take your waste home with you.”

  • Using a picture showing the main problem being not enough bins and commercial premises dumping the cardboard there, doesn’t exactly do anything to support the council in their claims.
