Installing security features such as video doorbells, motion sensors and smart locks helps people to feel safer in their homes and achieve peace of mind- but there are many more positives to include smart security features- including an increased house value!

Glenn Amato, Managing Director at ADT UK&I Subscriber, comments: “Security features have developed through the 148 years that ADT has been running. We now have technical, smart features that were once only seen in Sci-Fi movies.

“These features allow homeowners to monitor their houses even when they’re away from the home. Smart cameras and two way doorbells mean that you can view your home, and communicate with visitors even when you’re not home.

“There are also financial benefits to having smart security features, with our research showing that the average burglary in England and Wales costs £2,856.

“It has also been found that 72% of millennial home buyers said they would pay more for a smart home, meaning that when you come to sell your home, you will receive more interest and higher bids.”

Smart Security Systems Can Add Value To Your Home

With England and Wales seeing over 190,000 home break-ins last year, it is no surprise that homes that can offer high security are in demand. In fact, according to Google Trends, searches for “safety rooms” have increased by over 350% in the past year.

When asked, those surveyed said they are willing to pay up to £2,500 more for a house with smart security and energy saving features.

Smart Video Doorbells

Smart doorbells have been found to add an average of £180 to the value of your home.Smart doorbells allow you to see who’s at your door even when you are away from the house, sending you a notification whenever your doorbell rings or whenever somebody is outside your door. This is a fantastic way of keeping track of what happens in your area, as well as who is visiting your house.

Motion Sensor Cameras

Motion sensor cameras have been found to add an average value of £345. Motion sensor cameras alert your phone whenever any movement is detected in or around your house. This means you can see who is around your property.

There are also pet tolerant motion sensors, which take the size and activity of your animal into consideration, and will only activate on the detection of an intruder.

Analytical Outdoor Cameras

Just like motion sensor cameras, Analytical Cameras can add an additional value of over £300. These cameras are often hidden with modern designs for an inconspicuous aesthetic that doesn’t ruin the look of your home. They record in HD, and can be set to activate outdoor lights if even the smallest motion is detected in your perimeter- deterring any potential intruders.

Geo Fencing

By setting a virtual perimeter around your property, people designated on the account can be sent arming reminders if they are picked up to be leaving a predefined zone and the alarm isn’t set. Geo-fences can also be set up to work with smart plugs, so if you leave your designated zone or re-enter a zone, plugs will automatically switch off or on. This helps to eradicate thoughts of “have I turned my hair straighteners off”. The geo-fencing system is a great way to ensure peace of mind when leaving the house.

Heat Detecting Alarms

Heat detecting alarms are perfect for rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom, as they react to the temperature of the room instead of the amount of smoke or steam in the air. This means that the alarm will only alert authorities when there is a fire, not when your toast has been in the toaster for too long. Heat detectors can also ring the fire brigade automatically, meaning that if you are out of the house, authorities will still be notified and sent to help.

Having smart security can also save you money on your home insurance.

Looking for insurance deals that have discounts for theft and fire protection, as well as no claims bonuses can help you save hundreds of pounds a year.
