Nathaniel Cars, one of Wales’ best‑known family‑run motor groups, is opening a huge new eight‑acre preparation site just two miles from its Bridgend headquarters. The development will replace six rented storage facilities and become the central hub for every vehicle the company sells across the UK.
The expansion will see 40 new roles created over the next year as the business gears up to run the new super‑site.
Founded in Bridgend and still run by father‑and‑son team Wayne and Nathan Griffiths, Nathaniel Cars has grown from a small local dealership into a major player in the Welsh and UK automotive market. The company now employs more than 200 staff and operates showrooms in Bridgend, Cardiff, Cwmbran and Swansea.
The business has seen rapid growth in recent years, selling more than 8,000 cars this year compared with just 1,000 a decade ago. A major turning point came with the acquisition of an MG dealership in 2015 — a move that has since seen Nathaniel Cars named the number one MG dealer in the world twice and the top UK dealer seven times. This month, the company also celebrated selling its 20,000th MG.
The £1.5m NatWest funding supports the creation of the new site, while a further £4.7m from Lombard will provide working capital as the business scales up.
Nathan Griffiths, Group Director at Nathaniel Cars, said the expansion marks a major moment for the company and the community.
“This is such a great opportunity for us to continue building our brand but also for the local community to come and work with us. We know how difficult the job market has been here in Wales the last few years, so we’re really pleased to be able to create these new roles and opportunities for people in the local area.
“When my dad started the business 45 years ago, I don’t think he ever thought we’d be where we are today and I’m just so proud that we’re making this exciting move together.”
Jason Heath, Relationship Director at NatWest, said the bank was proud to support the expansion.
“Nathaniel Cars exemplifies how a family‑run business can grow and thrive while staying true to its community roots. Supporting their expansion is a testament to their hard work and dedication and we are excited to see their continued success and the benefits this will bring to the local area.”
Nathaniel Cars continues to support a wide range of community organisations, including local charities, the NHS, South Wales Police and football clubs such as Cardiff City, Swansea City and Newport County AFC.
