Plans have been submitted to transform the former Bethania Welsh Presbyterian Chapel on Woodfield Street in Morriston into a craft market, café, community hall and apartments.
The proposals for the currently empty chapel include demolition of single storey elements of the building, and the construction of a new two-story building to the rear of the chapel to accommodate the ground floor café and first floor community hall.
The planning application says the scheme is proposing a “mixed use development comprising of the conversion and alteration works to the existing chapel to accommodate a craft market (11 stalls) and 9 residential units.”
The residential element of the scheme includes one two-storey 2-bed house, one two-storey 3-bed house, four 1-bed apartments and three 2-bed apartments.
Bethania Chapel was built in 1878 by architects John Williams and William Williams of Swansea. It was rebuilt 10 years later in 1888 in the Romanesque style with a gable-entry and large arch in the façade.
