The 32-year-old will replace Gloucester’s departing number ten Adam Hastings who departs for Glasgow Warriors in the summer.
The Auckland born player left the Ospreys at the end of last season for pastures new having spent four seasons in South Wales with Japanese side Tokyo Suntory Sungolaith agreeing to his signature at the back end of last year’s World Cup.
His stay in Asia, however, would be cut short with news that the groin injury suffered in Wales’ encounter with Georgia would require surgery with Anscombe’s contract mutually terminated just two weeks in.
Having started his career with Aukland, Anscombe represented New Zealand at U20s level in 2011 and went on to play Super Rugby for the Blues and Chiefs, winning the competition twice with the latter.
A move to Wales in 2014 then took place after being courted to the national team by head-coach Warren Gatland thanks to eligibility of his Cardiff born mother. The experienced back would then spend a successful five years in the capital before joining fierce rivals Ospreys in 2019 but would be riddled by injury making just 14 appearances.
Anscombe now has decided his next destination is a Kingsholm, with the 41 cap Welsh star likely to sign on the dotted line with the Cherry & Whites as early as next week.
