32-year-old Lousi joined Scarlets from New Zealand side Hurricanes after playing every game at the 2019 World Cup in Japan, and featured in his second global tournament last year.
The New-Zealand born second-row impressed straight from the off and was named the Scarlets’ fans and players’ player of the year in the 2021-22 season.
At one stage it looked as if Tongan international Lousi, who had offers from elsewhere, would leave the Scarlets but he has decided to remain in west Wales.
Fans favourite Lousi, however, like many within the West-Walian camp has been plagued by a series of injuries this season, limiting his time on the pitch to just six club appearances as the Scarlets have struggled in the United Rugby Championship.
The signing of the Tongan, however, will be a massive confidence boost for the Llanelli based region as they look to improve on a record of just three victories in all competitions this season in their remaining fixtures.
Head coach Dwayne Peel speaking on the renewal said:
“It is fantastic news that Sam has signed a new deal. He is a key figure for us, an international second row with a huge amount of experience and a player who leads by example.
“From our conversations with Sam, he has faith in what we are building and our ambitions here at the Scarlets. We are a young squad and having someone of Sam’s stature in our leadership group can only help in bringing through the emerging talent we have at the club.”
Lousi commenting on the renewal added:
“Myself and my family are delighted to be staying here with the Scarlets, a place we have made our home for the last five years.
“It has been a tough season, but the club has a clear vision for the coming years and I am looking forward to being part of that.
“The supporters have given us amazing support since I have been here and hopefully we can reward them with some big performances in our remaining matches this season.”
