Asda has launched a Free From Gluten version of its fan-favourite novelty guinea pig cake, so that no shopper has to miss out on the furry friend fun.
Keen eyed Asda shoppers will remember the launch of the supermarket’s original Guinea Pig cake, named Ginny, and now those who cannot – or prefer not to – eat gluten can get in on the action with the arrival of Gretel the Free From Guinea Pig Cake.
Joining the supermarket’s novelty cake family, Gretel has tasty gluten free, vanilla-flavoured sponge filled with fruity raspberry jam. Topped with caramel-coloured frosting and sweet edible decorations, Gretel is sure to make the cutest party companion.
A real crowd pleaser, Gretel serves approximately 10 people (576g) and is also suitable for vegetarians. What’s more, the gluten free version of Asda’s Guinea Pig cake comes in cheaper than the original novelty cake (£10), at just £6.
Marks and Spencer started the novelty cake craze back in 1990 with its chocolate roll cake. which it named Colin the Caterpillar.
Discount supermarket ALDI famously introduced a copy-cat product that they named Cuthbert. Legal action brought by M&S against the similar product was eventually settled out of court.
Other supermarkets also carry similar caterpillar products including Morris the Caterpillar from Morrisons, the Curious Caterpillar at the Co-Op, Cecil the Caterpillar at Waitrose, Clyde the Caterpillar at Asda, Wiggles the Caterpillar at Sainsbury’s, Clive the Caterpillar at One Stop and Curly the Caterpillar at Tesco.
