The victim was taken to hospital after the incident, however his injuries are not said to be life changing or life threatening.
Police have said that despite rumours circulating locally, no knives were involved in the alleged assault.
In a statement from South Wales Police, a spokesperson said: “South Wales Police was called at 9:50am this morning to reports of an assault at St. Joesphs Roman Catholic Comprehensive in Aberavon.
“A 51-year-old man has been taken to hospital it is believed his injuries are neither life changing nor life threatening. A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
“We are aware of local speculation about the nature of the assault but we can confirm that no knives were involved.”
