With Sam Costelow and Joe Hawkins currently with the Wales Six Nations squad and Academy fly-half Elis Price sidelined with a foot injury, McBryde has joined the west Wallians this week from North Wales Super Rygbi Cymru side RGC.
The 29-year-old, a former Wales Under-20 international who came through the Scarlets pathway, made six appearances for the Llanelli-based side in the Anglo-Welsh Cup during the 2016 and 2017 campaigns. He returns to Parc y Scarlets, having spent the last two seasons back in North Wales following four years in the English Championship with Doncaster Knights.
The Gwendraeth Valley product, son of former Wales hooker and coach Robin McBryde, is well known to the region and environment with the club hopeful of a quick and seamless integration into the side.
Eighteen-year-old fly-half Carwyn Leggatt-Jones is another option to boss Nigel Davies this weekend at number ten, with the Llandovery College product set to make his third URC appearance in Treviso.
Scarlets travel to northern Italy on the back of a dramatic 27-22 late victory over Ulster at Parc y Scarlets on Saturday, their third win of the Championship campaign that took them off the bottom of the URC standings.
Speaking on the signing, Scarlets Interim Director of Rugby Nigel Davies said:
“I’ve watched Billy for many years. He’s been one of those players who has been a little unlucky with his opportunities.
“When we looked at our backup for this area, we have lost two potential 10’s to Wales.
“We have Carwyn, which is brilliant, and he’ll be getting his opportunity this weekend.
“Behind that we have a couple of injuries and players not quite ready for the challenge, and we felt we needed someone with a bit more experience.
“He brings that and is very physical, has a great kicking game and is really good in the environment, he has done it for a long time and talks well.
“Because we have a lot of young players, it adds a lot of value to that group.”
