In a back-and-forth contest which had a remarkable 11 tries shared between the two sides, it was the home side who would come out on top to wrap up a bonus-point victory in head-coach Richard Whiffin’s first game in charge.
For Wales, Dragons Walker Price would grab a double, whilst Morse, new captain Harri Ackerman, Huw Anderson and Lewis would all go over as the Welsh came from behind four times to secure their first win in the competition in two years.
It would be the Scots who would start the stronger of the two sides taking the lead in the tenth minute with their powerful scrum seeing Exeter Chiefs hooker Elliot Young drive over from close range.
A flowing move would see full-back Anderson finish Ackerman’s clever pass to put the Welsh in front for the first time midway through the first-half.
The powerful Scottish driving maul, however, would bare fruits once more with flanker Freddy Douglas this time the beneficiary to regain the advantage of the tie, before Wales’ slick attack play saw the pendulum swing the home sides way once more with speedy winger Price cooly finishing in the corner.
Wales would lead at the break with Morse scoring to the jubilation of the home support, bulldozering his way through several challenges from 20-yards after initially Price had made ground.
Young added his second of the game from close range to reduce the Scots arrears, before after several phases of relentless powerful forward pressure, Glasgow centre Kerr Yule would batter his way through under the posts to flip the contest once more.
The match would continue to be a battle between the Scots physicality and the pace of the Welsh with ball in hand. Centre Ackerman was next to add his name to the scoreline with his seventh for his country using great feet and power to hold off two Scottish challenges to finish a move full of creativity and invention.
Back would come the powerful Scots with Douglas scoring his second from a similar scenario, before the game swung on Scottish ill-discipline. Debutant Alex O’Driscoll sent to the sin-bin with ten minutes left on the clock for a deliberate knock-on after Morse had looked to spread play with a crossfield kick towards the corner.
With the extra man, Wales would find more gaps and would spread the play once more for Price to collect his second try in the corner, before replacement scrum-half Lewis would collect Harry Rees-Weldon’s chipped pass to add gloss to the scoreline.
A thrilling victory for Whiffin’s men who next travel to the Recreational Ground in Bath to face England under-20s next weekend.
