Swansea Council and the school’s governors identified a parcel of land that was surplus to requirements and it was agreed that it would be sold to help fund the £1.6m investment.

Contractors Carrick Sports were engaged to create the pitch and make other improvements and are close to completing the work.

In addition to the new all-weather pitch the school will continue to have grass football and rugby fields.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, Robert Smith, said:

“I’m really pleased to have seen the progress that has been made and I’m sure that the pupils are eagerly anticipating it opening in the coming weeks.

“Not only will the school’s sports teams be able to play and train all-year around, it will also provide a great asset for the wider community when not in use by the school.”

Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart added the project at Olchfa was yet another major investment in school sports facilities in Swansea.

“Swansea Council is committed to providing the very best facilities for our schools and communities and we have already helped to deliver all-weather pitches at Penyrheol, Morriston, Pentrehafod, Pontarddulais and Dylan Thomas secondary schools, while a new indoor sports barn with pitch is progressing well at Cefn Hengoed Community School.”
