35-year-old Stefan Cambriani, from Sketty, committed the offence at Whitz Pool hall in Uplands on Boxing Day 2023.
Swansea Crown Court heard that a man had attacked a fellow customer in a bar and pushed him down a flight of stairs after feeling “wronged” over a missing drink.
Mr Cambriani’s victim was left bleeding at the foot of the stairs at the sports bar with fears he had gone into cardiac arrest
The court heard the defendant has history of violence including assaults occasioning actual bodily harm and racially-aggravated common assaults.
Cambriani’s barrister said the defendant and tried to put his past behind him and it was disappointing to to see him back in court over “something as innocuous and inconsequential” as a mistake about someone taking his drink.
James Hartson, for Cambriani, said his client’s misuse of alcohol was an issue which needed to be addressed, and he said Cambriani also struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorder.
The barrister added that a number of elderly neighbours who live in the same block of flats as the defendant had taken the time to write references to the court in which they described the defendant as polite, helpful, and responsible.
Recorder Christian Jowett said the defendant had carried out an unprovoked assault on a stranger in the Uplands bar on Boxing Day night, and he noted that in the pre-sentence report Cambriani continued to blame others, including the victim, for what happened.
He said based on everything he had read and heard about the defendant he had come to the conclusion that there was no realistic prospect of rehabilitation in his case and that immediate custody was the only appropriate punishment.
With a one-quarter discount for his guilty plea, Cambriani was sentenced to nine months in prison for unlawful wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
He will serve up to half that sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.
Sergeant Kelly Richards said:
“Stefan Cambriani is fortunate that the injuries he caused to his victim were not even more serious.
“This is yet another case which highlights the negative effects of consuming too much alcohol whilst on a night out.
“We hope that Stefan thinks long and hard about his actions whilst in prison, and learns the important lesson that violence is never acceptable.”
