Dyfed Powys Police say the incident occurred around 11.20pm on Monday 18 March when a car collided with a stationary lorry heading eastbound on the M4 at junction 48 in Hendy.
The collision resulted in both vehicles being on fire.
Police say that sadly the driver of the car died at the scene. Next of kin has been advised and is being supported by specialist officers.
The M4 remained closed in both directions on Tuesday morning (19 March) between junctions 48 at Henry and junction 49 at Port Abraham. The motorway did not reopen until almost 3pm on Wednesday.
Police advised drivers to avoid the area and take an alternative route if possible, but local roads were severely congested with diverted motorway traffic.
