In an incident-packed encounter, referee Matthew Donohue pointed to the spot three times in the contest, with Boro scrambling away from south Wales with a point after an enthralling battle with a Swansea side a shadow of the team that lost to the promotion chasers on the opening day of the season.
Middlesbrough would have moved back into the top two with a win, but the draw means they remain in third after just two wins in nine games.
Alex Bangura’s rasping drive had given the visitors the lead in the opening 15 minutes as Boro looked on course to get back to winning ways, but the full back quickly turned from hero to villain.
The Sierra Leone international clumsily bringing down Wales forward Liam Cullen in the penalty area minutes later to give Swansea the chance to level the scoreline from the spot.
Slovenian international Vipotnik carried on his purple patch in front of goal, coolly sending visiting goalkeeper Sol Bryn the wrong way for his 19th league strike of the season, much to the appreciation of the home faithful and the annoyance of pensive Boro boss Kim Hellberg.
Number 20 would not be too far off for Swansea’s number nine, as Vitor Matos’ side would go into the break a goal to the good. Donohue given no option but to award a second penalty of the afternoon after Brynn’s needless and erratic challenge on Swans forward Eom Jisung had brought the South Korean to the floor.
Vipotnik would show excellent composure from the spot for a second time to beat the Boro number one, powering into the bottom left-hand corner to give his side a slender half-time lead.
Middlesbrough regrouped and started to show the quality that had taken them into the promotion race after the break, and after Swans goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux had saved excellently from Aidan Morris’ curling 20-yard effort, it wouldn’t be long for Hellberg’s side to draw level.
Hard-working attacker Tommy Conway bagging his seventh of the campaign, powering home from the spot 15 minutes from time after Eom had been adjudged to have brought down off-balance full back Callum Brittain in the penalty area.
The Swans came closest to gaining the three points late with Cullen drawing a late save from Brynn, whilst substitutes Sontje Hansen and Kaly Sene both went close for Boro.
But Boro would cling on for a precious point, which leaves them level on points with Millwall and Ipswich Town as the race for promotion continues to simmer nicely. Swansea move up one place to 15th with five games of the campaign remaining.
