Working as part of a team within high-pressure environments was something Jonathan ‘Jiffy’ Davies was used to during his glittering 15-year career in rugby union and league.

But he has been blown away by the care and commitment his wife Jay – and fellow patients on her ward – received after she had surgery at Morriston Hospital.

Jay, 48, is now recovering at her Swansea home after being discharged later the same day.

Jonathan, now a highly-respected rugby commentator, said:

“We couldn’t have asked for better care and attention given by the staff despite them working in a manic, busy environment.

“The staff on the Pembroke Ward were brilliant with her and the rest of the patients. They worked so well together and were very calm. They made sure everyone was looked after despite having a lot of patients under their care.

“The anaesthetists and recovery team were first class, and Jay’s surgeon really put her at ease and made sure she understood everything that was going to happen. Everyone we came into contact did just that, and it made a potentially stressful situation a lot easier to deal with.”

Jonathan has been a huge supporter of the NHS, and holds an annual cycling challenge that raises money for the South West Wales Cancer Centres in both Velindre and Singleton hospitals.

This year marks the fourth event, and hopes to take the overall fundraising tally to over £250,000.

“We are both big supporters of the NHS – it’s an amazing service, ” added Jonathan.

“It’s there when we need it most, and we’re so grateful that we have it available on our doorstep.

“I think it’s important for people to show their gratitude and let the staff know that they are really appreciated by us for all that they provide.”
