The Swans suffered their heaviest league defeat to Cardiff since 1965 as a second-half double from forward Callum Robinson and a header from Greek centre back Dimitrios Goutas’ gave the Bluebirds a 3-0 win.
Cardiff boss Omer Riza was shown a red card in stoppage time after coming on to the pitch following a touchline skirmish with Swansea midfielder Goncalo Franco.
Whilst ugly scenes were on full show after full time as players and staff had to be separated after a lengthy melee.
A visibly angered Williams deflected saying his players should have shown more fight during the game than after the whistle.
“It is a dreadful day,” said Williams in his post-match conference.
“I feel very disappointed that we start the game fine and then our performance evaporates and falls off the edge of a cliff. It’s upsetting and worrying.
“We have been a group that has failed to perform at a consistent level.
“Today the change in our performance from halfway in where we lost a grip and gave away a lot of set pieces saw the player suffer so badly, I can imagine is a lot to do with the atmosphere.
“The opposition could feel that and done a good job to heap pressure on us to make us feel weak.
“They had the upper hand on us, and we weren’t able to cope with that.
“The players know what the fixture is about, and everyone is up for the game and well prepared, but we lost a grip on it and were not able to get a foothold on it again.
“We were sloppy and weren’t aggressive enough when the ball was up for grabs. It looked like then people were not so confident with the ball.
“If we think that in any way is going to take anything away from a shoddy performance, we are very much mistaken.
“The time for fighting was on the pitch. To make one more ball, one more run forward, tackle when your legs have gone, header, or action to the box to try to win the game. That is fighting not scrapping on the pitch, it’s pathetic.
“We lost control of the emotions in the same way we lost control of the game. It’s a reflection of the match. We lost control and started to make bad decisions.
“We didn’t perform and suffered a big defeat, now we have to respond really well and regroup quickly, because otherwise the hangover will last too long.”
